వస్తుస్వరూపం స్ఫుటబోధచక్షుషా
స్వేనైవ వేద్యం న తు పండితేన ।
చంద్రస్వరూపం నిజచక్షుషైవ
జ్ఞాతవ్యమన్యైరవగమ్యతే కిమ్ ॥ 56 ॥

స్ఫుటబోధచక్షుషా – నిర్మలమగు జ్ఞానమనెడు నేత్రముతో, వస్తు స్వరూపం = ఆత్మ స్వరూపము, స్వేనైవ - తనచేతనే, వేద్యం - తెలిసి కొనదగినది, తు = కాని, పండితేన = తనకంటె అన్యుడగు పండితునిచేత, న = కాదు, చంద్రస్వరూపం - చంద్రుని యొక్క స్వరూపము, నిజ చక్షు షైవ = తనయొక్క నేత్రముచేతనే, జ్ఞాతవ్యం = తెలియదగినది, అన్యైః = ఇతరులచేత (నేత్రములు లేనివారిచేత), అవగమ్యతే కిమ్ - తెలియబడునా ఏమి?

స్ఫుట - నిర్మలమైన, సంశయాదులకంటే భిన్నమైన, ఏ, బోధః = శ్రవణ మనన నిదిధ్యాసనముల వలన కలిగిన సాక్షాత్కారము గలదో, దానిచేత, వస్తుస్వరూపం - ఆత్మరూపమగు వస్తువుయొక్క యాథార్థము, అనగా పరమాత్మాభిన్నత్వము, తనచేతనే, వేద్యం = విషయముగ చేసికొనదగినది;

అంతయేకాని తనకంటె భిన్నుడగు ఏ పండితుని చేతను తెలియదగినది కాదు.

శుకవామదేవాదులు పరబ్రహ్మ సాక్షాత్కారమును పొంది ముక్తు లైనారు. దానిచే ఇతరుల కేమి వచ్చినది . అని భావము.

అందులకు తగిన దృష్టాన్తము నిచ్చుచున్నాడు. తాపమును నివారించి ఆహ్లాదమును కల్గించెడు చంద్రుని స్వరూపమును తన నేత్రము తోడనే తెలిసికొనవలెను గాని చక్షుర్విహీనులగు ఇతరులచే గ్రహింపబడునా?

లేదా, నేత్రములు కలవారైనను, తనకంటె భిన్ను లైనవారిచే తెలిసికొనబడినను, చంద్రస్వరూపము ఈతని తాపమును తొలగించునా? ఇతనిని ఆహ్లాదింప చేయునా ? అట్లే అని యర్థము.

ఆవ. లోకప్రసిద్ధముగు పాశాది బంధమును పైవాడెవ్వడైనను విడిపించుటకు సమర్థుడు కావచ్చును. అంతియేకాని అనాది సిద్ధమగు బంధమును కాదు అని చెప్పుచున్నాడు..

vastusvarūpaṃ sphuṭabōdhachakṣuṣā
svēnaiva vēdyaṃ na tu paṇḍitēna ।
chandrasvarūpaṃ nijachakṣuṣaiva
jñātavyamanyairavagamyatē kim ॥ 56॥

Here we see the poet in Sankara. After illustrating bondage with strife and disease, he is now mentioning the moon to further reinforce the concept.

Moon has been celebrated by many a poet. One Telugu dictionary by Sri G.N.Reddy provides 364 synonyms for the word "SaSi" which stands for the moon in Sanskrit!

The movie industry likes to give us many songs around moon. Here are some:

challaniraajaa O chandamaama

The king of cool radiance, O, moon

నీ కథలన్ని తెలిసాయి
nee kathalanni telisaayi

I know all the stories about you

ఓ చందమామ.. నా చందమామ
O chandamaama ... naa chandamaama

O, moon, my moon!

And in a sombre tone, a poet alludes the traditional story that lunar eclipse is caused because of a snake called Rahu swallowing the moon.

చెప్పినా సాక్ష్యం ఇవ్వకు

The snake called Rahu is coming fast (to swallow you)

అయ్యో తరిగి పోతోంది ఆయువు

O, moon, why don't you listen to my story?

వింటే మనసు ఉంటే, కలిసేవూ నా జత

If you listen and put your heart into it, you will empathize with me

నీ రూపమే ఒక దీపము గతిలేని పేదకు
nee roopamE oka deepamu, gatilEni pEdaku

You are the light for the helpless poor

నీ కళలే సాటిలేని పాఠాలూ  ప్రేమకు  
nee kaLaLE saaTilEni paaThaaloo prEmaku

Your phases are peerless lessons to love

నువ్వు లేక నువ్వు రాక విరువవూ కలువలు

Without your presence lotuses don't bloom

జాబిల్లీ నీ హాయి పాపలకు జోలలు
jaabilli nee haayi, paapalaku jOlalu

Your soothing rays are like lullabies

The reason for enumerating the above songs is, just as those with eyes and other faculties intact can appreciate the moon and no one else can explain it to those with blindness or impaired faculties, the atma (soul) can only be discerned by those with a clear mind no matter how much explanation is offered.

One illustration is when we have multiple pots filled with water each reflecting the moon, we don't perceive a multiplicity of moons in the sky. If paramatma is like the moon, the jeeva atma is its reflection.
