Victory of Devi Mahatripura Sundari over Bhandasura

“Bhandasura was a demon created from the ashes of Kamadeva by Chitrakarma. This character makes his appearance in, and is the main antagonist of the Lalitopakyanam, part of Brahma Purana.

Bhandasura was created from the ashes of Kamadeva and performed severe austerities to please Lord Shiva, for which he was rewarded with the boons that whomsoever dares to fight Bhandasura would forfeit half of his strength and masculinity to him. Bhanda was also given the city of the demons, Shunyaka (in the Mahendra Hills) to live in and was promised emperor hood of the multiverse for sixty-thousand years without any obstructions in his path. For obvious reason, no god, man or demon dared to attack him. He created two brothers, Vishukra and Vishanga from his shoulders. From his heart he created his sister, Dhumini. He also brought to life four wives with whom he had thirty sons in total and a daughter named Rashmi Prabha.

Fearing him and his vicious boons, the gods of the multiverse went into hiding where they worshiped the Goddess Parashakti for the last few thousand years of Bhandasura’s uninterrupted rule, while he was immersed in lust and luxury by Lord Vishnu’s Maya. When Bhandasura came to know of the gods’ conspiracy against him, he attacked them at the spot where they were performing a Yajna to appease the goddess. In fear, the Devas entered the fire pit and immolated themselves. When a relieved Bhandasura had gone, the Goddess Parashakti incarnated on the from of Goddess Tripura Sundari and resurrected all the gods of the multiverse and restored their duties.

She recreated the universe. From her various organs, she created the worlds, Pancha Bhutas etc (for example, Earth from her feet, darkness from her hair etc). Then, she created Bala Tripurasundari from her heart, Gayatri from Kundalini, Varahi from her ego, Matangi from her intellect, Sampatkari from Ankusha, Ashwaroodha from her Pasha & other Devis like Nakuleshwari, Jwalamalini etc.

Goddess Tripura Sundari went to war against Bhandasura, with an army strong enough to destroy him and the inhabitants of Shonitapura. Her army was led by Goddess Sampatkari on an elephant and Goddess Ashwarudha on a horse. She herself went to war on the Sri-Chakra, the Chakraraja-Ratha with every weapon known to god and man alike. Her commander in chief, Goddess Dandini (Varahi) followed on Kiri Chakra and her prime minister Mantrini/Shyamala (Matangi) followed on the Geya Chakra.

The war was in favor of Goddess Lalita (Tripura Sundari). Her daughter Bala successfully killed all thirty of Bhandasura’s sons, while Matangi killed his brother Vishanga. His other brother Vishukra was killed by Varahi. Before dying however, Vishukra had placed a jaya-vighna-yantra in the middle of the Goddess’s troops. This froze everyone except Lalita, Bala, Kameshwara Shiva, Matangi and Varahi. Devi Lalita then, with her husband in the from of Kameshwara, created Mahaganapati (the highest form of Ganesha), who destroyed Vishukra’s yantra, thus reanimating the other goddesses. Goddess also created Maha Subramanya (highest form of Kartikeya)

Bhandasura now recreated the demons killed by Vishnu in each of his seven incarnations. Goddess Lalita Parvati brought forth each of Vishnu’s incarnations (Dashavatar) from her fingernails, that put the demons to an end.

The Mother put out every firebrand sent by the demon her way, and destroyed his army with the Maha-Pashupatastra. She finally killed Bhandasura and destroyed Shonitapura with the Kameshwarastra. With Bhandasura incinerated by her arrow, the Goddess recreated Kamadeva from his ashes and restored Rati’s marriagehood and peace to the multiverse.”

Another version of the story goes as:

When asuras led by Bhandasura attacked Devas they ran to Lord Brahma for help. Brahma took them to Lord Vishnu who also expressed his helplessness. They all then went to Lord Siva who agreed to help them. He performed a yagna with sapta samudras (seven great oceans). He asked all the Devas to walk into the fire (sacrifice). As the yagna continued Lalita Devi emanated from the fire commandeering a huge army. The army was made of millions of elephants, horses, chariots, etc. Under Lalita Devi's leadership the army destroyed Bhandasura and his family. I meditate on the great Empress. She is red in color,

and her eyes are full of compassion, and holds the noose,

the goad, the bow and the flowery arrow in Her hands.

She is surrounded on all sides by powers such as aNimA

for rays and She is the Self within me.

The Divine Goddess is to be meditated

upon as seated on the lotus with petal eyes.

She is golden hued, and has lotus flowers in Her hand.

She dispels fear of the devotees who bow before Her.

She is the embodiment of peace, knowledge (vidyA),

is praised by gods and grants every kind of wealth wished for.

పద్మములో ఆశీనురాలై, పద్మరేఖలను బోలిన కళ్ళతో యున్న ఆమెను ధ్యానించెదను. ఆమె బంగారు వర్ణము గలదై, చేతిలో పద్మములు ధరించి యున్నది. ఆమెకు వినమ్రతతో నమస్కరించిన భక్తులకు అభయం ఇచ్చేది. ఆమె శాంతి, జ్ఞానములకు ఆశ్రయము. ఆమెను దేవతలు పొగడగా, కోరిన వరములిస్తుంది.

सकुङ्कुमविलेपनामलिकचुम्बिकस्तूरिकां

సకుంకుమ విలేపనా మళికచుంబి కస్తూరికాం

I meditate on the Mother, whose eyes are smiling, who holds the

arrow , bow, noose and the goad in Her hands. She is glittering

with red garlands and ornaments. She is painted with kumkuma

on her forehead and is red and tender like the japa flower.

నవ్వుతున్న కళ్ళతో, చేతులతో విల్లు, అంబులు, పాశము, అంకుశము ధరించియున్న ఆ తల్లిని ధ్యానించెదను. ఆమె ఎర్రని పూలదండలతో, ఆభరణములతో అలంకరింపబడి యున్నది. కుంకుమ వలన ఆమె నుదురు ఎర్రని వర్ణములో, సున్నితమైన జప పువ్వువలె నున్నది

सिन्दूरारुणविग्रहां त्रिनयनां माणिक्यमौलिस्फुरत्

సింధూరారుణ విగ్రహాం త్రిణయనాం మాణిక్య మౌళిస్ఫుర-

May we meditate on the DIVINE MOTHER

whose body has the red hue of vermilion,

who has three eyes,

who wears a beautiful crown studded with rubies,

who is adorned with the crescent Moon,

whose face sports beautiful smile indicating compassion,

who has beautiful limbs,

whose hands hold a jewel-studded golden vessel filled

with nectar, and in the other a red lotus flower.

జగన్మాతను పూజిద్దాం. ఆమె శరీరం సింధూరం వల్ల మెరయుచూ, త్రినేత్రములతో భాసిల్లుతూ, మణులు తాపబడిన కిరీటంతో ప్రజ్వరిల్లుతూ, అర్థ చంద్రుని శోభతో కూడి, చిరునగవు కూడిన దయార్ధ్ర మోముతో విరాజిల్లుతూ, అనూహ్య అవయవ సౌందర్యముతో కూడినదై, చేతుల్లో మణులతో తాపబడి, మకరందముతో నిండియున్న బంగారు కలశములను ధరించి, మరొక చేతితో ఎర్రని కలువ పువ్వును కలిగియున్నది.

night of the lunar half-month

She who is resplendent with a nose that has the beauty of a

newly blossoming campaka flower

ఆమె ముక్కు యొక్క శోభ క్రొత్తగా విరబూసిన చంపక పువ్వు వలె నున్నది.

२०. ताराकान्तितिरस्कारिनासाभरणभासुरा -

20 తారాకాంతి తిరస్కారి నాసా భరణ భాసురా

She who shines with a nose-ornament that excels the luster of a star

ఆమె ముక్కు పుడక నక్షత్ర కాంతికన్నా అతిశయమై నున్నది

२१. कदम्बमञ्जरीक्लृप्तकर्णपूरमनोहरा -

21 కదంబ మంజరీ క్లుప్త కర్ణ పూర మనోహరా

She who is captivating, wearing bunches of kadamba flowers

as ear-ornaments

ఆమె కదంబ పువ్వులను చెవులకు ఆభరణములుగా ధరించి రమణీయముగా నున్నది

२२. ताटङ्कयुगलीभूततपनोडुपमण्डला -

22 తాటంక యుగలీ భూత తపనోడుప మండలా

She who wears the sun and the moon as a pair of large earrings

ఆమె సూర్య చంద్రులను అతిశయముతో కర్ణాభరణములుగా ధరించి యుండేది.

२३. पद्मरागशिलादर्शपरिभाविकपोलभूः -

23 పద్మరాగ శిలాదర్శ పరిభావి కపోల భూః

She whose cheeks excel mirrors made of rubies in their beauty

ఆమె బుగ్గలు పద్మరాగములతో చేసిన అద్దముల కన్న మిన్నగా మెరయుచున్నవి

२४. नवविद्रुमबिम्बश्रीन्यक्कारिरदनच्छदा -

24 నవ విద్రుమ బింబ శ్రీన్యక్కరి రదనచ్చదా

She whose lips excel freshly cut coral and bimba fruit in

their reflective splendor

ఆమె పెదవులు పగడము, క్రొత్తగా కోసిన బింబ పండు వర్ణములో ప్రకాశించుచున్నవి

२५. शुद्धविद्याङ्कुराकारद्विजपङ्क्तिद्वयोज्ज्वला -

25 శుద్ధ విద్యాంకు రాకార ద్విజ పంక్తి ద్వయోజ్జ్వలా

She who has radiant teeth which resemble the buds of pure knowledge

ఆమె మెరిసే పళ్ల వరస శుద్ధమైన జ్ఞానమును సూచిస్తున్నది.

२६. कर्पूरवीटिकामोदसमाकर्षिदिगन्तरा -

26 కర్పూర వీటి కామోద సమాకర్షి దిగంతరా

She who is enjoying a camphor-laden betel roll, the fragrance

of which is attracting people from all directions

ఆమె కర్పూరముతో కూడిన తాంబూలమును సేవించుచుండగా, ఆ పరిమళము నలుదిక్కులనున్న జనులకు ఆకర్షణీయముగా నున్నది

२७. निजसल्लापमाधुर्यविनिर्भर्त्सितकच्छपी -

27 నిజ సల్లాప మాధుర్య వినిర్భర్త్సిత కచ్ఛపీ

She who excels even the veeNa of sarasvatI in the sweetness

of her speech

ఆమె పలుకుల మాధుర్యము సరస్వతీ దేవి వీణా వాద్యముకన్న తియ్యగా నున్నది.

२८. मन्दस्मितप्रभापूरमज्जत्कामेशमानसा -

28 మందస్మిత ప్రభాపూర మజ్జత్కామేశ మానసా

She who submerges even the mind of KAmesha(Lord shiva) in

the radiance of Her smile

ఆమె శివును మనస్సును తన సొగసైన చిరునవ్వుతో డోలలాడిస్తుంది

२९. अनाकलितसादृश्यचिबुकश्रीविराजिता -

29 అనాకలిత సాదృశ్య చిబుక శ్రీ విరాజితా

She whose chin cannot be compared to anything(it is beyond

camparison because of its unparalleled beauty)

ఆమె చుబుకము దేనితోనూ పోల్చలేని అపార శోభతో కూడి యుండేది

३०. कामेशबद्धमाङ्गल्यसूत्रशोभितकन्धरा -

30 కామేశ బద్ధ మాంగల్య సూత్ర శోభిత కంధరా

She whose neck is adorned with the marriage thread tied by Kamesha

ఆమె శివుడు కట్టిన తాళి బొట్టును మెడచుట్టూ ధరించి యుండేది

३१. कनकाङ्गदकेयूरकमनीयभुजान्विता -

31 కనకాంగద కేయూర కమనీయ భుజాన్వితా

She whose arms are beautifully adorned with golden armlets

ఆమె బంగారు భుజ భూషణమలు ధరించి మిక్కిలి రమణీయముగా నున్నది

३२. रत्नग्रैवेयचिन्ताकलोलमुक्ताफलान्विता -

32 రత్న గ్రైవేయ చింతాక లోల ముక్తా ఫలాన్వితా

She whose neck is resplendent with a gem-studded necklace with

a locket made of pearl

ఆమె ముత్యము వ్రేలాడుతున్న మణులతో కూడిన హారము ధరించి శోభాయమానముగా నున్నది.

३३. कामेश्वरप्रेमरत्नमणिप्रतिपणस्तनी -

33 కామేశ్వర ప్రేమ రత్న మణి ప్రతిపణస్తనీ

She who gives Her breasts to KAmeshvara in return for the gem

of love He bestows on Her

ఆమె తన కుచములను శివుని వజ్రమువంటి ప్రేమకు ప్రతిఫలముగా నిచ్చేది

३४. नाभ्यालवालरोमालिलताफलकुचद्वयी -

34 నాభ్యా లవాల రోమాలి లతా ఫల కుచ ద్వయీ

She whose breasts are the fruits on the creeper of the fine

hairline that starts in the depths of Her navel and spreads upwards

ఆమె వక్షోజాలు తీగ వలె నున్న నాభి లోతుల నుండి మొదలైన రోమాల వరుస యొక్క ఫలముల వలె నున్నవి

३५. लक्ष्यरोमलताधारतासमुन्नेयमध्यमा -

by the fact that the creeper of Her hairline springs from it

३७. अरुणारुणकौसुम्भवस्त्रभास्वत्कटीतटी -

37 అరుణారుణ కౌసుంభ వస్త్ర భాస్వత్కటీతటీ

She whose hips are adorned with a garment as red as the rising

sun, which is dyed with an extract from safflower (kusumbha) blossoms

She who is adorned with a girdle which is decorated with many

gem-studded bells

As mentioned in Brahmanda purana, Shyamala devi (Mantrini)

fought with Vishukra and killed him with Brahmashironamakastra

(a powerful weapon named brahmashira). Dandanatha devi (Potrini)

killed Vishanga with her plough weapon and pestle. However in

Lalita sahasranama it is mentioned that Vishukra was killed by

Varahi , and Vishanga was killed by Mantrini as above -
